Drowning Prevention Program

The Challenge

Nearly 2,000 children die from drowning in Vietnam each year, making it the leading cause of death among those aged 5 to 14 (Ministry of Health, 2025). In April 2024, three primary school students tragically drowned while swimming in a reservoir in Đắk Lắk’s Central Highlands (VNExpress, 2024). The loss of young lives in such preventable circumstances is devastating.

Our Response

Recognising this urgent need, GKIA financed a program focused not only on teaching swimming, but on equipping children with essential water safety and survival skills to help prevent drowning in high-risk communities. Although the need for such programs is clear, financial resources are extremely scarce. GKIA is one of only two organisations funding this initiative. Thanks to sponsorship, these classes are completely free for children to join — a vital condition to attract students in poor communities.

What makes the program unique is the use of a mobile swimming pool. GKIA financed the transportation of the pool to remote villages, allowing children to safely practise in a controlled environment. Once students reached the required safety level, the pool was moved to the next village, extending life-saving skills to even more communities.

We worked closely with Mr. Mai Văn Chuyên, a dedicated local teacher, who organised and taught the classes, ensuring that GKIA’s funding went directly to the program. To enhance safety, we also provided first aid kits and training support.

Importantly, we were not just sponsors at a distance—we were present on site every year, jumped in the pool, and took part in hands-on teaching, showing our commitment to walking the talk.

Our Impact

This initiative gave children in remote, ethnic villages their first structured lessons in water survival skills, helping them learn how to stay afloat, remain calm in emergencies, and assist others safely. The mobile pool model made training accessible to communities that otherwise would never have the facilities to teach swimming or survival skills. In 2004 and 2005, we helped teach more than 400 children vital water safety — an essential life-saving skill.

Our work was even featured on Vietnamese television and local newspaper, bringing national attention to the urgent issue of child drowning and the importance of prevention.
